Bioenergy Discoveries Pave The Way For The Production Of New Hydrocarbons

Fatty acids, a diet rich in chlorophyll that endow them with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, have been hailed as versatile and useful as raw materials for bioenergy production.

Scientists at the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center have become fascinated with a particular type of long-chain fatty acid, called furan fatty acid, because it can replace petroleum-based products, including fuels, engine lubricants, pharmaceuticals and food additives. Now, a team of GLBRC collaborators at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has described how furan fatty acids are produced in bacteria and other cells.


欧宝体育Like other fatty acids furan fatty acids or FuFA are found in the membranes that form cell boundaries. These fatty acids act like oily filters to protect the inside of cells from changes in the external environment. They can also act as chemical messengers, telling cells when toxins or stress are present.


欧宝体育FuFAs is a particular type of fatty acid that has broad appeal to biofuel scientists because oxygen atoms are attached to the middle of hydrocarbon chains.


欧宝体育"FuFAs's chemistry helps bacterial cells resist damage to their membranes," says Rachelle Lemke, a senior research specialist at GLBRC. The oxygen atoms in FuFAs are also of interest to biofuels and other industries." The product was recently published in the Journal of Biochemistry. "Oxygen-light lighters help ignite all the other molecules in the fuel for combustion. FuFA's chain length also makes it a potential lubricant for engines and other equipment."


欧宝体育Lemke had previously identified FuFA and discussed how Rhodobacter Spheroides dies when exposed to a highly reactive oxygen molecule called singlet oxygen. Lemke is a graduate student and GLBRC director Tim Donohue, a professor of bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. However, they still lack information on how to make these important types of fatty acids.
